Quilted Threads is a busy quilt shop that sells fabrics and quilting supplies as well as a gallery space and educational center. They recently renovated the building to accommodate their growing business and decided to beautify their landscape at the same time. There were no gardens or plantings to speak of and the surrounding landscape looked rather drab and plain. The clients wanted the landscape to be eye-catching and noticeable from the road. They have a colorful sign and logo and a vast inventory of fabrics and materials and so wanted the plantings to reflect this color and diversity. In other words, we needed the landscape to reflect the beauty and artistry of a quilt!
We came up with a list of plants that would thrive in this particular location and offer color and texture throughout the season. We installed planting beds along the two visible sides of the building and in the driveway island bed which had been an empty bed of mulch for quite some time. The client wanted to have a color scheme that included oranges, purples and chartreuse greens. So we incorporated these colors by using perennials and flowering shrubs as well as shrubs that have colorful foliage such as the purple-leaved Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo' and Spirea trilobata 'Mellow Yellow' which has chartreuse, feathery foliage. As these plants mature and become established, the beds around Quilted Threads will evolve into a vibrant patchwork of color and texture welcoming visitors into the building.
